Which sofa material is more durable?

The most important thing to note is that not all leather and fabrics are made equal. Material quality can vary, and it is worth understanding the specific material you are looking to have your sofa covered in before deciding.   

Leather durability

There are many different grades of leather and each has different qualities you’ll need to consider for your lifestyle. We have broken down the terminology of the most common leather grades. 

Full-grain leather – regarded as the highest quality leather, full-grain comes from the top layer of the hide and retains all of the natural grain.  This means imperfections like scars and wrinkles are shown in the leather. As a result, only the highest quality hides are chosen for full-grain. 

Aniline leather – prized for its authenticity, the aniline dye process brings out the leather’s natural grain, including imperfections like scars or wrinkles, however aniline leather marks easily and can be challenging to maintain on an everyday basis.  

Semi-aniline leather – ideal for furniture as the authentic beauty of aniline leather is retained, and a pigment is added that permeates the hide adding a light protective coating and achieving a rich deep colour without compromising that classic leather look.   

Top-grain corrected grade leather – the outer layer of the hide is removed so the leather retains its natural feel but achieves a uniform and refined finish. With an added layer of protection, corrected leather is robust and easy to maintain.  

Nubuck leather – produced from top-grain hides and has the grain side (outside) buffed back until it has a very small velvety nap. Nubuck is wonderfully smooth, but it is high maintenance and marks very easily. 

Bonded Leather – made from layers of scrap leather that is ground up and mixed with a binding agent, and then embossed with a leather grain pattern. This is the least durable option and not used by HOME LOOK FURNITURE. 

Fabric durability

When it comes to fabric, you will need to consider your lifestyle and how you will use your sofa.  

If you have children or pets, or your sofa will be in a high-use area, opt for heavy domestic or commercial fabrics to ensure longevity. Selecting a fabric with total variation will also hide any stains better than a flat colour.   

Pilling can be a concern with fabric. Pilling occurs when the fibres in the fabric rub together and the friction causes the fibres to become loose and ball up. It is important to note that pilling is not a fault in the fabric but the result of fabrics rubbing against each other. 

As a general rule, the looser the weave, the more it may pill. To help lessen pilling, opt for natural materials or textiles made from longer fibres such as wool, linen or tightly woven microsuedes. There are also various tools available to help remove pilling from your furniture.

Which is the easiest sofa material to clean?

Leather is a natural product which features a protective coating that is resistant to many spills and soiling.  

Because leather can be wiped clean or dusted with a dry cloth when needed, it is relatively low-maintenance in terms of cleaning.  

However, leather does still require specific products to prolong its life. The main extra requirement for a leather sofa is regularly applying leather conditioner to ensure the leather remains soft and moisturised.   

Fabric will generally require deeper cleaning than leather as you don’t have the option to wipe the fabric clean easily. In many cases, spills, stains and marks that are not cleaned immediately can become permanent.  

We strongly suggest treating fabric with a suitable protective chemical spray. This will go a long way in helping maintain its appearance, protect against common spills, and assist when you need to spot clean any marks.

When purchasing furniture, it’s always a good idea to ask for specific cleaning and care instructions. For furnishings already in your home, here are 10 tips to keep the wood looking its best for many generations to come.

1. Don’t Mistreat Furniture

To avoid rings and heat damage,always use a table mat when setting glasses or mugs on wood tables, and never place hot food directly on them without the protection of a trivet or potholder. Incorporate decorative placemats or a tablecloth to protect your dining room table from food and drink spills.

2. Avoid Environmental Damage

Sunlight, heat and other environmental factors can wreak havoc on your fine wood. Don’t place valuable furniture in front of uncovered windows, vents or fireplaces, as the light and heat can damage and fade the wood.

3. Dust Often

No one really likes to dust, but the chore is one of the best ways to take care of your furniture. Airborne particles can build a filmy layer on wood that scratches the surface. Frequent dusting keeps this buildup from happening. Always use soft cloth like cotton T-shirts, cloth diapers or microfiber to avoid damage. Lambswool dusters are great for ornate carvings or hard to reach places because they effectively attract and hold dust.

4. Keep Your Wood Clean

Sometimes dusting isn’t enough and you’ll find it necessary to clean your wood furniture. Never use all-purpose cleaners, which can cause damage to the finish. If you have a spot that is heavily soiled or sticky, dip a cloth in water that contains a mild dish detergent. Wring it out as much as possible and gently wipe the area. Be sure to follow up with a rinse from a damp cloth containing just water, then immediately wipe with a soft dry cloth.

5. Protect Your Wood

Most commercial polishes and sprays contain either petroleum distillates or silicone oil to for a fresh and shiny finish, and to offer some protection for your wood. Make sure not to use too much product, because it can cause buildup that combines with dirt to create a dull, sticky film. Always be sure to buff well when using products to help avoid this buildup, and never use these products with a wax protectant because the combination will result in another gooey mess.

6. Treat Wear and Tear

Even with the best care, wood furniture can sustain injuries. For minor nicks and scratches use a product like wood spray detergent . This liquid polish hides abrasions, restoring the wood’s inherent beauty.

If damage is too extensive to be treated with polishes or touch up sticks and you aren’t quite ready to give up your treasured fixture, you may need to resort to something more drastic. Painting a piece of damaged furniture will breathe new life into it and give it several more good years. Painting also allows you to save time by skipping sanding, something you can’t do if you opt to re-stain.

7. 7. Keep Wood Smelling Fresh

Sometimes older pieces will develop an unpleasant odor, especially if they’ve been stored. You can sprinkle the surface with baking soda to freshen it up, and place a pan of charcoal inside drawers to absorb smells that emanate from inside. You can even leave the piece outside in a shaded area on a warm, dry day to give relief from a malodorous stench and make your furniture good as new.

8. 8. Remove Tough Stains

Despite your best efforts, sometimes the inevitable happens and your beautiful wood furniture gets stained. No matter what kind of stain you have, be sure to clean it as quickly as possible — the longer it sits, the harder it will be to remove.

• For white rings from wet glasses, apply a paste of equal amounts white toothpaste and baking soda. Rub it into the stain until it’s gone. Then, wipe off the furniture and buff with a dry cloth.
• For dark spots from water damage, try gently blotting the stain with a cloth soaked in vinegar.
• For crayon marks, apply mayonnaise over the area. Let it sit for a couple of minutes before rubbing clean with a damp cloth and buffing with a dry cloth.

The most practical advantage of wood furniture is its strength. Hardwood tabletops, desktops, and shelves won’t sag over time the way cheaper woods like plywood, particleboard, and fiberboard can. It can maintain that strength for decades—century-old furniture is routinely found in usable condition in attics and basements. The bookcase my friend’s son made off with, for instance, was originally handed down to the family from an elderly aunt. High-quality furniture retains its value, too: Resold heirloom-quality wood furniture can often command a premium price.

The greatest advantage of wooden furniture, though, lies in its enduring look and appeal. The grain and tones of genuine hardwood bring warmth and character to any room. When finished correctly, solid wood has a luster that can’t be matched by a veneer. Even when the finish of wood furniture isn’t properly maintained, it still looks attractive. It’s why shabby chic furniture with a distressed finish is a part of the modern rustic look, which continues to grow in popularity. My friend’s old bookcase, for example, currently lends a stately charm to his son’s dorm room.

Thanks to its lasting strength and enduring beauty, damaged hardwood furniture can usually be fully repaired or restored with the right tools and skills. When my friend’s son moved to a new dormitory, it took two people to carry his improvised TV stand across campus. Wood furniture’s strength, stability, and durability come at a price: It’s heavy. Other disadvantages to wood furniture include the following:

Wood is vulnerable to water. Moisture can damage wood finishes and soak into the wood underneath, causing it to split and swell.

Ultraviolet light can change wood’s color and damage its surface. In a way that’s similar to the effect sunlight has on skin, sunlight can break apart chemical bonds in wood and cause the surface to change colors. If you’re not among the wood furniture owners who find this kind of discoloration attractive, a skilled craftsman can restore an old finish to return the color to its original hue. Wood furniture with a durable and protective topcoat over the finish is likely to resist discoloration over time.

Finishes can be scratched or damaged by sharp objects. In 1986, the civil war was ended and Law and order were restored in several parts of the country.
Ever since then, huge efforts have been made to salvage the economy under the national
Resistance Movement (NRM). Today, at a growth rate of 6.5% per year for the last ten years, the
economy of Uganda has steadily recovered (MFEPD, 2008). During this period, the construction
sector which is also the leading user of timber and furniture has experienced tremendous growth
(UBOS, 2006). At an averaged growth rate of 5 % per year, the furniture industry has
experienced a tremendous recovery over the last 10-15 years (Odokonyero, 2005).

The industry has also witnessed technological advancements as well. There has been a progressive shift from 8 old technology and traditional practices to modern wood working technology and craftsmanship
(Calvalho, 1999). At present, the furniture industry is perhaps the most vibrant sector within the wood industry in
Uganda. Mainly dominated by the small and micro scale producers
2004) the industry is expanding fast and making significant contribution to the economy.

According to UBOS report (2006), the furniture sub sector is employing 25% of the urban population especially the low income groups, youth, semi-literate and women. Although still a few, medium scale producers are also slowly taking the stage in furniture production in Uganda. A recent study by the Department of Forest Products Engineering of Makerere University (2011), reports up to 100 medium sized furniture producing firms producing
for the Kampala market. The most prominent ones include; Hwang Sung Furniture Company,
Erimu furniture company, Lotus Arts, Kaava Furniture Company, Biplous, Furniture Works , Home Look Uganda,
and Master Wood Furniture Company. These enterprises are based on high technology
machinery from Europe and Asia conferring high value addition and wood recovery.

Furniture Market and Distribution Channels in Kampala District
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistic (UBOS) business report (2006), there are about 300
registered furniture businesses that sell office and household furniture in Uganda. The market is
mainly serving the domestic demand. Only 10% of furniture produced is exported mainly to
Rwanda, Kenya , Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Furniture sales are by
majority made along streets (in show rooms) and through roadside displays in Kampala city and 9 its suburbs. The showrooms are mainly used by bigger furniture companies for high value products and less by small scale producers’ because of the high rental tariffs. Of recent, there has also been an increasing influx of household furniture imports into the Ugandan market. By the year 2003 alone, household furniture imports into the country had reached one million United States Dollars (Anon, 2003). The changing consumer preferences to high quality luxurious furniture are driving the shift in consumer preference to imported furniture especially among the middle and high income consumers. Although a hand full of reasons can exist to the question why urban consumers are preferring furniture imports, visual appeal (modern design and surface finish) is one of them.

This is because majority of the imports are mainly based on artificially 2engineered Wood and
produced from high technology systems. Compared to the locally produced furniture from
natural solid wood, engineered wood can be made to different light shades and surface finishes
that impact attractiveness to their furniture which may not be easily achieved by natural solid
wood. Moreover, majority of the small scale enterprises are still using low technology (hand
plane and saw) that may not permit complex value added designs.

1. Visit a bed store

2. Don’t just look at it, lie on it

It’s essential that you always try a bed before buying it. We’re all different and one bed isn’t made for everybody. People’s requirements for support will differ depending on their weight and build, so you need to be really comfortable with your decision.

3. Choose a bed together

If you’re going to be sharing a bed, then you need to choose a good bed for both you and your partner. That way you can both lie on it and make sure it’s big enough and comfy enough for both of you.

4. Think about the size of the room

Overall bedroom size should always be taken into account. If the bedroom is too small, a massive bed won’t be for you. To relax properly you need to have a reasonable space around your bed. If you’re improving a multifunctional space, consider that bed offers more living space when you’re not sleeping on them. And if you’re not quite sure what  bed you need you can ask the seller for recommendations.

5. Make the most of space with storage beds

Where possible you should buy a new bed and a new mattress at the same time, because a new mattress on an old bed won’t last as long as it would on a new one.

11. You get what you pay for

When you are shopping for a new couch follow these 11 tips to ensure a great purchase.

Check the Fit

There is no sense in considering a couch if it doesn’t fit you well. Seats should be comfortable for all members of your family. If you’re buying a recliner sofa, make sure it is comfortable in all the different positions. The primary fit consideration is the depth of the seats. Select deep or shallow seats, depending on your height—the couch back should support your back adequately with your feet flat on the floor and the backs of your knees just slightly forward of the lower seat cushion. And if the couch is where you like to nap, make sure to lay out on the couch and see if it is long enough for comfortable snoozing.

Evaluate the Frame

Upholstery fabric and cushions can be replaced when they get old and worn, but no couch can be considered a good piece of furniture unless it has a solid, quality inner frame. If your goal is to buy a good sofa, start by learning about the frame. Cheaper sofas may have frames made from particleboard, plastic, or metal, but a good-quality couch will have a solid hardwood frame—preferably a hardwood frame made of #musambya, #mugavu , or ash. Pine frames are cheap, but they often begin to warp and wobble within five years or so.

The legs of the couch should be either integral parts of the frame or held on with screws or dowels. Avoid a couch if the legs are merely glued on.

One easy test for solid frame construction is to lift one front corner or leg of the sofa off the floor to a height of 6 inches or so. If the other front leg doesn’t quickly rise off the floor, too, it’s a sign the frame is twisting, and is therefore weak. Any sofa that visibly twists or creaks under this test is one you should avoid.

Ask About the Joinery

Although the method by which the frame parts are held together may not be immediately evident, the sales person or printed technical specifications if any should have this information. Look for frames that are joined with wooden dowels, double wooden dowels, wooden corner blocks, or metal screws and brackets. Never buy a sofa that is assembled with only staples, nails, or glue, although these may be used to provide additional reinforcement.

Test the Arms

A sofa with a good hardwood frame assembled with dowels or corner brackets should be quality piece of furniture, but it is still a good idea to forcefully test the arms of the sofa to make sure they are very tight, with no give when you lean on them. In a family with active children, the most common area of failure on a couch (other than the upholstery) is the arms.

As you test the couch, push hard on the arms and look for any sign of wobble. Avoid any couch that isn’t rock-solid.

Consider the Springs

The springs that hold up the cushions on a couch come in three levels of quality. Least expensive (and least durable) are those that aren’t springs at all, but just webbing or mesh. Avoid these couches if your goal is a quality piece of furniture.

Most couches use what is known as serpentine springs—sinuous pieces of snaking wire that span the gap between frame members. These offer good support, but they may sag over time if the metal isn’t heavy-gauge.

Luxury sofas are fitted with what is known as “eight-way hand-tied springs,” which are very comfortable but also expensive. Some experts dispute if hand-tied springs are any more comfortable than good serpentine springs, but you can be the judge of that.

Feel the springs through the upholstery. Good springs will be quite firm and spaced close together for good support. There should be good support without too much give when you sit on the couch.

Feel the Padding

The frame and all the corners of the couch should be well padded. Run your hand over all corners to make sure you can’t feel the edges of the frame through the upholstery. If you can, the upholstery may wear through quite quickly, and your couch will not be very comfortable to use.

Test the Operating Mechanisms

If your couch is a recliner or sleeper, make sure to operate the mechanism repeatedly and aggressively to make sure it operates smoothly and easily. Reclining, or motion furniture is generally more expensive, and you are paying for a functioning, smoothly-running mechanism. Don’t overlook any mechanical glitches or rough operation you notice-these will only become more pronounced after repeated use in your home.

Evaluate the Upholstery

Quality upholstery may not be critical to the sitting comfort of your sofa, but it is critical to its visual appeal.

Just as in well-tailored clothing, patterns and stripes should match at the seams. Although it might not catch your eye right away, mismatched patterns and strips  will give you the sense that something is “off”. Stripes that match at the seams make a sofa look well finished. Patterns should be centered, and all seams and welts should run straight. Uneven welting and seams that are pulled to one side or another mean that the cover was badly tailored. With fabric upholstery, higher thread counts indicate a denser weave and more durable fabric.

If there are any buttons, check to see that they are sewn on securely. Loose buttons will come off and quickly get lost.

Check the Cushions

Seat cushions should be firm and resilient and fit snugly within the sofa frame. The cushions should regain their shape after you press down and let go. A cushion that stays put when you press down will be flattened in no time, end up looking unsightly and feel uncomfortable when you sit on it. Cushions that do not fit snugly will also lose their shape quickly and the edges will start looking unsightly.

There is considerable debate over which type of material is best for sofa cushions.
